EcoWorks Launches Grant to Drive Community Change in SE Michigan

The Michigan Infrastructure Office (MIO) announced $87.9 million in EPA Community Change Grant (CCG) funding for projects across Michigan to support home repairs, energy efficiency, clean energy technology, and climate resilience. Funded by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), the projects prioritize communities most affected by pollution, climate change, or disinvestment.

Key awards include:

  • Southwest Michigan Planning Commission: $20M for resilience hubs and energy upgrades in Benton Harbor.
  • Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan: $23M for energy-efficient tribal homes, resilience hubs, and wild rice restoration.
  • EcoWorks (Detroit): $20M to convert 20 houses of worship into resilience hubs and launch a 30-vehicle electric rideshare program.
  • Kalamazoo County: $18.9M to repair 300 homes and establish four emergency shelters/community centers.
  • Midwest Tribal Energy Resources Association: $20M (with ~$6M in sub-awards for Michigan tribes) for tribal home weatherization and energy efficiency.

The Climate Justice Challenge, funded by Michigan’s $11M “Make it in Michigan Competitiveness Fund,” provided 5% matching grants and support for federal compliance.

Michigan ranked 4th nationally in CCG awards and is leading the nation in winning IRA-funded projects—$26B in investments and 21,000+ jobs. The state has invested $191M to leverage over $1B in federal funds across climate, infrastructure, economic, and public safety initiatives.
